The Orchards: A Unique Residential Interior Design by Anthony Lei

Creating Unique Spaces with Lights and Shapes

Inspired by the idea of unobstructed space, Anthony Lei designed The Orchards, a residential interior project that seamlessly connects the living room and the bedroom. The design features a brightly lit bathroom as a centerpiece, setting the drama for the entire flat. With its unique shower space and integrated lighting, this design offers a refreshing and functional living experience.

The Orchards is a residential interior project that experiments with defining domestic spaces through lights, shapes, and proportions. The design showcases a snaky line that runs across the room, setting out the bathroom and the spaces around it. A stretched ceiling, a U-shaped light trough, and carefully selected furniture items further enhance the overall design.

One of the unique properties of The Orchards is its ability to eliminate barriers between different areas of the flat. The living room seamlessly connects with the kitchen and the bedroom, offering a sense of freedom and openness. Sliding doors provide flexibility in space usage, allowing for maximum openness when desired. Additionally, ample storage space is provided through built-in cabinets around the kitchen and the closet area.

The realization of The Orchards involved a meticulous process. Construction drawings and 3D images were used to communicate with the builders, ensuring the quality of the finished product. All built-in furniture items were factory-made and installed on-site to achieve a better finish quality and reduce noise and dust pollution. The bathroom enclosure features a combination of curved and flat glass panels with frosted stripes, adding to the unique design. Waxed oak flooring throughout the living room and bedroom, along with large size concrete texture tiles in the bathroom, create a natural outlook and a relaxing atmosphere.

The Orchards has a floor area of 50 square meters and was completed between June 2015 and February 2016 in Hong Kong. The design underwent extensive research and testing, with various layout options developed and tested in 3D modeling. The curvy bathroom layout proved to be a breakthrough, offering a successful alternative for similar residential projects. Overcoming challenges in junction details where the stretched ceiling, sliding glass door, curve panels, and U-shaped light trough converge, the design achieved the desired effect.

The Orchards received the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Orchards stands out for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With its unique approach to defining spaces through lights and shapes, The Orchards by Anthony Lei offers a refreshing and functional living experience. The design seamlessly connects different areas of the flat while providing ample storage space and a natural outlook. The Orchards is a testament to the power of innovative design in creating unique and inviting living spaces.
